Our Rabbits New Diet
In this day in age, modern science has been greatly exploring our pets dietary needs. A Biologically Appropriate Diet is now considered the healthiest and the best diet for our pets. As we begin to switch our dogs to raw and our cats to grain-free, Hoppy Harlequins has decided to go one step further. We are gradually changing our rabbits feed to a more appropriate diet using the percentages that we have been given through scientific research.
Our More Appropriate Diet
Our rabbits have always had access to an unlimited amount of top quality orchard grass, and that wont change. Now we introduce them to a quality alfalfa/timothy hay mix pellets, and a blend of healthy treats and veggies. We also give compressed oat hay cubes to give more variety to the hay our rabbits eat!

Rabbit Pellet Myths
|
Myth 1: Pellets should be the main diet of a rabbit.
Truth: Did you know that pellets should only make up about 5% of a rabbits diet?
Myth 2: Rabbits need pellets to keep their teeth worn down.
Truth: A grass hay is more than enough to keep their teeth worn down. When a rabbit eats it grinds down the long hay fibers. In fact, it has been scientifically proven that pellets are not sufficient enough to keep a rabbits teeth worn down, as when a rabbit eats pellets they mash it between their teeth rather than grind it. If you are worried still, buy a few wood chews such as apple branches or willow branches. This will provide more fiber to keep their teeth healthy and give your rabbit(s) a fun activity to keep them entertained and happy!
Myth 3: Pellets were specially made to give a rabbit the balanced nutrients it needs.
Truth: Rabbit pellets were actually made during WW2 for the sole purpose of accelerating a rabbits growth for a quicker butcher time. On top of this, many studies have shown that most brands of rabbit pellets and their recipes are not truly balanced for a rabbit. This could be because pellets are only to be a small portion of their diets.
